Avian flu rules for backyard flocks in Arizona
University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, in its coverage of a confirmed avian influenza case in a Maricopa County backyard flock, tells bird owners who suspect highly pathogenic avian influenza to call the USDA hotline at 866-536-7593. Its biosecurity advice for backyard keepers is to keep birds separated from wild birds and their droppings, including by covering coops and runs so wild birds can't reach feed or water. The page dates from December 2024, so duck owners should check the Arizona Department of Agriculture and USDA for current flock rules, quarantine requirements and outbreak status before relying on it.

Finding an avian vet in Arizona
The Arizona Veterinary Medical Association, the state's professional body for veterinarians, runs a find-a-veterinarian search on its website for locating a practice near you. Because ducks are avian patients, call ahead and ask whether a clinic sees waterfowl or poultry before booking, since many general small-animal practices don't. The association site also has a separate members-only directory area, which isn't meant for the public. Duck Friends' own vet listings for Arizona can help narrow the search to clinics that have reported seeing ducks.
