Keeping ducks in North Carolina

What the state’s own agencies say, with sources. Not legal advice.

Avian flu rules for backyard flocks in North Carolina

North Carolina's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tells backyard flock owners to report sick or dying birds right away, after which a state or federal animal health official follows up about the flock. Fresh dead or sick birds can be taken to a state veterinary diagnostic laboratory branch for necropsy and avian influenza testing, but the department asks owners to call first. Its biosecurity advice for people who keep ducks is notable: waterfowl can carry the virus, so chickens, turkeys and other poultry should be housed apart from ducks. The page also lists warning signs such as reduced energy, drops in egg production, swollen heads and breathing trouble.

Finding an avian vet in North Carolina

NC State's Veterinary Hospital in Raleigh runs an Exotic Animal Medicine Service that sees pet birds, including backyard poultry, as well as small mammals and other exotics. Ducks are not named explicitly on the page, so call ahead at 919-513-6999 to confirm they can see your bird before you book. The hospital asks owners to bring the animal in a carrier, which keeps it safer and calmer in the lobby, and to bring a sample of its usual diet to the appointment.
