Avian flu rules for backyard flocks in Washington
Washington's Department of Agriculture asks duck keepers who suspect bird flu, or who see unexplained deaths in a domestic flock, to call its Sick Bird Hotline. A WSDA veterinarian reviews each report and contacts the owner to judge the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza. If the risk looks high, a veterinarian visits to test the flock; if it looks low, the owner gets monitoring and biosecurity tips. The agency says testing is free. Its biosecurity advice is to keep poultry away from wild waterfowl and their droppings, in a covered area that sheds water. Sick or dead wild birds go through Fish and Wildlife's online reporting tool instead, and routine problems like worms are a matter for your own veterinarian.
