Avian flu rules for backyard flocks in Florida

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) says anyone who works with birds, not only veterinarians, must report sick birds to the department. Unusual sickness or die-offs in domestic poultry go to the Division of Animal Industry by phone during office hours or after hours, or by email to the Report Animal Disease address. Dead wild birds are reported separately to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission through its online form. FDACS also collects samples from backyard flocks as part of its monitoring, so duck keepers may be contacted for testing.

Finding an avian vet in Florida

The University of Florida Small Animal Hospital in Gainesville runs a Zoological Medicine service that sees birds and exotic pets. Its list of bird patients explicitly includes ducks and geese alongside parrots, raptors and chickens, which makes it a notable referral option for duck owners in Florida who can't find a local avian vet. Check with the hospital about appointments, emergency intake and referral requirements before travelling.
